UFC Weight Classes Explained: From Strawweight to Heavyweight
The UFC currently has 12 weight classes — eight men’s divisions and four women’s. Each class has its own culture, fighting styles, and legends. Whether you’re watching live or managing fighters in TKO Tycoon, knowing the divisions is fundamental.
Men’s Weight Classes
- Heavyweight (206–265 lbs): The most powerful fighters in MMA. Fights end fast. Jon Jones, Stipe Miocic, Francis Ngannou defined this era.
- Light Heavyweight (186–205 lbs): Power meets athleticism. Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier, and Glover Teixeira have dominated.
- Middleweight (171–185 lbs): A stacked division. Israel Adesanya’s striking dominance has set the standard.
- Welterweight (156–170 lbs): One of the deepest divisions. GSP, Kamaru Usman, and Leon Edwards have run it.
- Lightweight (146–155 lbs): Often called the most competitive division. Khabib, McGregor, Poirier, Makhachev — always entertaining.
- Featherweight (136–145 lbs): Speed and heart. Alexander Volkanovski’s era has been historic.
- Bantamweight (126–135 lbs): Technical mastery. Sean O’Malley and TJ Dillashaw are fan favorites.
- Flyweight (116–125 lbs): Lightning fast, technically brilliant. Demetrious Johnson set the all-time defense record here.
Women’s Weight Classes
- Women’s Featherweight (136–145 lbs): Amanda Nunes ruled this division alongside bantamweight.
- Women’s Bantamweight (116–135 lbs): Ronda Rousey’s home base. Now Amanda Nunes’ legacy.
- Women’s Flyweight (116–125 lbs): Valentina Shevchenko’s dominance was legendary.
- Women’s Strawweight (up to 115 lbs): Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk have produced some of the best fights in UFC history.
Weight Cutting: The Hidden Battle
Most fighters walk around well above their fight weight and cut water weight before weigh-ins. A lightweight might walk at 170 lbs and cut 15 lbs before the fight. This is controversial — severe cuts impair performance, recovery, and can be dangerous.
Weight Classes in TKO Tycoon
In TKO Tycoon, each fighter is assigned a weight class based on their physical profile. Strawweight and Flyweight produce technical fights with lots of rounds. Heavyweight fights end early. Manage accordingly.
